About Us

Overview How Our Architecture Works For You:

Hexstone Wealth was built with a specific kind of client in mind: someone who has worked hard, made smart decisions, and reached a point where managing their financial life deserves more than a one-size-fits-all approach. We exist to provide that.

The Petoskey stone is one of Michigan's most recognizable symbols. Found along the shorelines of the northern Great Lakes, it is defined by its striking geometric pattern — a series of six-sided cells that fit together with quiet precision. That pattern, the hexstone, became the foundation of our name.

It felt right. Something rooted in this state, structured by design, and shaped over time. That is the kind of practice we set out to build.

How We Got Here

David Smith entered the financial industry in 2009, at one of the more turbulent moments in modern financial history. That timing was formative. The years that followed included a stretch in management, where the work shifted from individual client relationships to building and leading teams. That chapter brought perspective. It also clarified what he wanted to return to.

Hexstone Wealth was founded with the benefit of everything that came before it: the market cycles, the leadership experience, and a clear sense of how a modern wealth management practice should operate. Not inherited. Intentionally built.

Where We Stand

There is a gap in this industry that does not get talked about enough. On one end, you have advisors early in their careers, still developing the depth of experience that complex financial situations require. On the other hand, you have seasoned professionals whose clients privately wonder about their own succession plan.

We occupy a different position. Experienced enough to have guided clients through real market conditions and significant life transitions, and at a stage in this career where our clients' long-term futures are our long-term futures too.

What Guides Us

Integrity.
We say what we mean and mean what we say. Straightforward advice, even when it is not what someone hoped to hear.

Stewardship.
Your assets represent decades of discipline. We treat them accordingly.

Calm.
Markets fluctuate. Circumstances change. Our job is to bring clarity and steadiness to moments that can feel uncertain.

Personalization.
A financial plan is only as useful as it is relevant. We build around your life, not around a template.

Honesty.
In the recommendations we make, the expectations we set, and the conversations we have along the way.

My career started at the end of 2009, which means my first year in this industry was the year after one of the worst financial crises in modern history. That timing was not lost on me. Watching people lose jobs they had held for decades, and seeing families absorb financial setbacks some never fully recovered from, made one thing clear: having a plan matters enormously. The absence of one can cost people far more than money.

My grandfather understood hard work. He built a grocery store that supported much of our family and was, by every measure, a success. Eventually, unexpected medical costs and a lack of long-term financial structure forced him to sell it. I have never framed that as a failure on his part. What he built was real. What was missing was someone in his corner thinking ten steps ahead. That is the job I showed up to do.

Growing up in metro Detroit shaped how I approach this work. My father worked for everything our family had, and my mother raised three boys with a kind of steady, quiet care that I try to bring into every client relationship. Detroit is a city that respects effort and looks out for its own. That is the standard I hold myself to.

Michigan State University prepared me well, but experience taught me more. Over fifteen years in this industry, including more than a decade in a management role, have given me a perspective on what good financial planning actually looks like in practice. I left that chapter in 2025 knowing exactly what I wanted to build and how I wanted to build it. Hexstone Wealth is the result of that clarity.

What keeps me in this work is the part that cannot be automated: being calm for someone who cannot yet see through the fog. Every client comes with a different puzzle, and finding the right way to put the pieces together is something I genuinely find fascinating.

When I am not working, you will likely find me in the kitchen. My homemade biscuits and baklava have made me the de facto host among our friends, and I am happy to own that title. My wife and I have been together since high school, our families still live five minutes apart, and our daughter is the best reason I have for every decision I make. I also grew up playing hockey alongside my two brothers, and the game is still a big part of my life. When the season slows down, I trade the rink for a fishing rod.

The common thread throughout my career has been caring for people - something that has always been a part of who I am. Long before stepping into this role, I spent nearly a decade in the dental field as a Patient Care Coordinator and later worked within the senior living community. Those years shaped me deeply, as I was able to be present with people in meaningful, and often difficult moments - times I never took lightly and felt honored to be a part of. Even in the small role I played, I saw how simply being there for someone could make a meaningful difference; and over the years, that understanding has only grown stronger.

In my role as Client Services Assistant, I support both the broader work of the practice and our clients, helping ensure their experience feels clear, organized, and well supported. I’m part of conversations that range from simple questions to more personal, possibly unexpected moments and I help clients move through them with compassion and reassurance. That trust also means seeing the bigger picture when they can’t, anticipating needs, and staying a few steps ahead so they feel supported every step of the way.

Originally from Alpena — “the warm and friendly port” of northern Michigan — I now live in Farmington Hills with my husband, John, and our children - where we enjoy the Farmers Market Saturday mornings, the warmth within the downtown and the feeling of home our family has found here.

My role here is straightforward: make sure our clients feel taken care of from the moment they reach out to the moment their needs are met. Behind every well-run client relationship is someone keeping the details in order, and that is where I focus my energy.

What drew me to this field was the opportunity to be genuinely useful to people during important moments in their financial lives. A finance degree from Western Michigan University gave me the foundation, but the work itself has shown me what I value most about it: no two situations are ever the same. Every client walks in with a different set of goals, circumstances, and questions, and finding ways to support each of them well is something I take seriously.

Originally from White Lake, Michigan, I still call it home. When I step away from the office, I am usually out on the water with family and friends or in the garage working on a car.
